The Pintsch Shunt Enhancer offers a specialized, effective solution designed to mitigate shunting sensitivity problems on railroad signal system track circuits caused by rusty rail, rail surface contamination, or similar problems. It is not a replacement for a vital track circuit nor is it a replacement for a complete axle-counting system. The Pintsch Shunt Enhancer detects wheel flanges entering a track circuit. It then provides a hard-shunt across the circuit to enhance reliability, thereby minimizing problems such as diminished warning times at grade crossings or "disappearing trains" in wayside track circuits.
